The remains of 115 babies, including 5 who were nearly full term and viable, were found in Washington D.C. earlier this month by pro-Life activists. The babies’ remains were found outside of the abortion facility Washington Surgi-Clinic in a box labeled “Curtis Bay Medical Waste Services.” The pro-Life activists reported the babies to the Metropolitan Police Department homicide unit, as the babies had horrific injuries indicative of infanticide and illegal abortion methods. One baby was found to have her neck broken and brain removed.
The 5 murdered babies are currently being held at the D.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the remaining 110 babies who were mainly in the first trimester, were released and have been given funeral services, a naming ceremony, and a proper burial.
However, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, D.C. Police, and Chief Medical Officer have stated there will be no autopsy or investigation into these horrific crimes committed by the abortion facility, which is operated by Dr. Cesare Santangelo, an OB-GYN and abortionist doctor who stated in 2013 that babies who survive abortion attempts should be left to die. Mayor Bowser responded to the over 70 Republican lawmakers who called for her to investigate into this case, to which she responded that the only federal laws broken were by the pro-Life activists, not the abortion clinic.
The babies’ injuries and gestational age indicate that federal laws were probably broken, specifically the Partial-Birth Abortion Act as well as the Born Alive Infants Protection Act.
All 115 babies, regardless of their gestational age, have value and deserved the right to Life. This is absolutely horrific and evil, but horrific, evil acts like this are being committed all over the country by abortionists and pro-abortion advocates. In West Virginia we need to do everything that we can to protect the unborn and make abortion effectively illegal.
It’s easy to say one is pro-Life and will protect the unborn, but I will take specific actions if elected delegate.
This past WV legislative session, House Bill 4004 attempted to ban abortion after 15 weeks, it passed the House, but was stuck on a second reading in the Senate and as a result did not pass. While this would have been a small step and would have saved innocent lives (currently abortion is banned in WV after 20 weeks), I believe that West Virginians and Americans can do better to protect the lives of the unborn, as life begins at conception and a 15 week baby is still an individual with God given rights and dignity.
Last September, the Texas Heartbeat Law went into effect, which bans abortion after the baby’s heartbeat can be detected, which is currently 6 weeks gestation, but can be detected as early as 5 weeks gestation, which is often when pregnancy is first discovered, making abortion effectively illegal in the state of Texas. This is currently the strictest abortion law in the country. I believe that West Virginia should follow Texas in this and do everything we can to protect the Unborn. Additionally, I would work to amend the West Virginia Constitution to include the lives of the unborn to be constitutionally protected in West Virginia.
Lastly, investigations need to be conducted into the babies found in D.C., but also other similar incidents across the country. In West Virginia, we have the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act, the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, and the Unborn Child Protection from Dismemberment Abortion Act, and other legislation that has saved many lives, but this is just the start. Abortion is the greatest human rights violation of our time, and I pray that we will soon look back in horror that this was ever considered legally acceptable in our society.
